Atala, a painting by artist, V. Z. Hughes Russell 1911-1999, was created in a painting class she joined as therapy after her breast cancer operation in 1965.
She was diagnosed by her surgeon as incurable but her husband would not except the diagnosis and prepared juice from all manner of fruits and vegetables. All cancer in her body even bone cancer went into remission and she lived another thirty five years, out living her husband nearly30 years. When she would ask what I wanted from her estate, my answer was always, " Atala".

I took the opportunity to make the the dress while she was in the hospital having my brother, I was allowed to use the machine after that. Most of my skills are self taught, In 1960 with 4 children under four and a half Years old, I started sewing, designing, pattern drafting, clothing construction and altering in my home studio....
